The communication method of the invention is implemented on an optical bus simultaneously supporting different data rates and is characterised in that a unique time multiplexed transmission protocol is used on the bus, all the devices are constantly in listening mode in relation to the bus, those devices that need to transmit data insert the data in time windows defined by the device itself and in accordance with the activity of the other devices, independently of the data rate of these devices, and each receiving device senses the activity of the bus, recognises the type of data rate and reconstitutes the data directed towards it.
