A device for cutting variable lengths of material, e.g. tubing 20 from an extruder, comprises a primary movable member, viz. a rotatable disc 18 (or an oscillating or reciprocating member), and a knife 16 or knives pivoted to the disc and movable into operative position by compressed air supplied via a duct 66 to a piston/cylinder and rack arrangement. In operation, tubing is fed by rollers 22, 24 past the cutter 16. The disc 18 makes a predetermined number of revolutions with the knife retracted, corresponding to a desired length of tubing. Control is by a photo-electric arrangement, comprising an apertured disc 86, or a cut away cam (not shown), a bulb 92 and a photo-cell 90, feeding a Schmitt-trigger and pre-set decade-counter circuit 94. In one embodiment, the blade 16 is retracted by a spring, and in another embodiment by a double-acting pneumatic cylinder.
