PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To recover a useful component in the produced tar on producing phenol at a high efficiency. SOLUTION: This method for recovering a useful component in the produced tar on producing phenol by the liquid phase oxidation reaction of benzoic acid is to extract and recover the useful components by using a multiple stage water extracting process at the weight ratio of extracting water to tar in the range of 0.8-1.1 at the first stage extraction process and 7-10 at the second and following stages.
