The metal strip (1) has a flat central section (13) made in one piece with edges (10, 30) which are reinforced by folding them over and compressing so that their are no perceptible gaps between the folds. The central section and edges of the strip have an integral surface treatment, i.e. for both exposed and concealed surfaces, and the material from which the strip is made is one which is difficult or impossible to weld, e.g. aluminium or an aluminium alloy.
