PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having high reproduction output comparable to that of a vapor-deposited tape in spite of a coating type medium, having a satisfactory C/N ratio and low skew strain, ensuring satisfactory touch with a head and excellent in running durability. SOLUTION: A nonmagnetic layer as a lower layer contg. at least nonmagnetic powder and a binder is formed on a flexible substrate and a magnetic layer as an upper layer contg. ferromagnetic powder and a binder is formed on the nonmagnetic layer to obtain the objective magnetic recording medium with two or more layers. The nonmagnetic powder is inorg. powder having a Mohs hardness of >=3, the average dry thickness of the magnetic layer is <=1.0μm and the heat shrinkage rate of the magnetic recording medium after holding at 70 deg.C for 48hr is <=0.4%.
