4a-Aryldecahydroisoquinoline compounds typified by the compound of formula (1) or pharmacologically acceptable acid-addition salts thereof. When pharmacologically evaluated in vitro and in vivo, these compounds exhibit an excellent preventive effect on ischemic brain nerve cell necrosis, the effect of inhibiting the progression of cerebral infraction, a potent analgetic effect and an antitussive effect. Thus they are usable in the field of medicines as a brain cell protective agent to be used in order to prevent or treat cerebrovascular disorders, ischemic cerebral disorders, brain nerve cell disorders, dementia, etc., an analgetic agent and an antitussive agent.
