With the aid of an application nozzle device (14), pasty material is applied to a surface (18) to be coated. The pasty mass is supplied under pressure via a conveying tube (12). The application nozzle device (14) has a shut-off device, which can be actuated by compressed air, for preventing adhesive mortar material flowing out. When the application nozzle device (14) is switched on, the compressed air supplied via a compressed-air line (16) is diverted into a flow-off line (36) in order to strike the surface (18) from the outlet opening (38) thereof. The flow-off line (36) ends, in the application movement direction (46) of the application nozzle device (14), in front of the application opening (24) thereof. The surface (18) to be provided with the pasty mass is thus cleaned of loose mechanically adhering impurities by compressed air immediately before the application of the pasty mass.
