A roller has a rotary hollow roller and a non-rotary crosshead that extends through the hollow roller in the longitudinal direction. The hollow roller is supported by supporting elements (14) that act against its inner circumference and that have each a hydrostatic bearing pocket (23) whose dimension in the longitudinal direction of the roller is at least thrice as long as in the circumferential direction. Deformation of the hollow roller and compression across the edge (24) that delimits the bearing pockets (23) are thus prevented.
