The key card (8) has a regionally magnetised insert (9) between its parallel broad sides (A,B). The length and width of the insert are considerably greater than the thickness defined by the separation of the broad sides. Protrusions (10,11) are arranged on at least one of the broad sides, whereby the magnetised regions of the insert lie in the valleys of the profile formed by the protrusions. One or more longitudinal ribs are arranged on the broad faces at the edges of the card. A number of humps, , nubs or protrusions can be arranged at intervals on the broad surfaces. The key card can have a U-shaped cross-section.
