A channel (7) is formed next to the running track or in the region of it and is in one or more sections. The old material which lies under the track is dug out and directed into the region of the channel. The old material is then removed from the channel and the resulting free space (8) is filled with replacement material. The free space is filled with replacement material directly after excavation of the old material followed by levelling or packing of the replacement material.
