The device includes a base (2) attached to a fixed shaft (1) and a magnetic circuit made of ferromagnetic material. The circuit includes two magnetic crowns (3,4) one being mounted on the base while the other is attached to the opposite extremity of shaft through a connection piece (5). The two crowns are provided with a number of teeth (3a,4a) supporting two coils (x,y) which are supplied from an ac source via a bridge. The voltage measured between two points (D,E) is proportional to the angular displacement of the crown teeth and therefore proportional to the torque applied to the shaft.
