Low power pulsed radar system for railway vehicle wheel detection

The radar system has a transmitter/receiver module generating a pulsed waveform (32), the reflectivity of the pulsed radar signals being modified according to their incidence on objects found in the environment. Transmitters (42) emit pulsed radar signals towards target areas spaced along the railway track (22) at intervals. Receive antennae (43) detect incoming signals (40) from the target areas and a logic processor (44) detects movement of a wheel of the railway vehicle along the track, from the wheel position returns from different transmit antennae.
