Fuel cells or batteries comprise porous electrodes separated by and in intimate contact with porous, electrically non- conductive diaphragms filled with liquid electrolyte during use, the average radius of the pores in those sections of the diaphragms adjacent the electrodes being smaller than the average radius of the pores in the electrode surfaces, a fuel reactant circuit for introducing a fuel reactant at the edges of an electrode of the or each cell, and an electrolyte conveying device connected to the cell or battery and arranged to convey liquid electrolyte under pressure successively through the pores of the electrodes and diaphragms. Electrolyte may enter or leave the cell or battery through the end faces of the terminal electrodes, or through the edges of electrodes or diaphragms together with or in separate zones from a reactant and the batteries may be divided into one or more zones for the circulation of electrolyte. As shown in Fig. 3 electrolyte from the water extractor 10 is fed with a gas stream to electrode 20 and returned to the water extractor from the end chambers 6, and the battery is thus divided into 2 zones. In series connected batteries it is preferred that the electrolyte flow between adjacent cells is through a long channel so that the resistance of the electrolyte in the channel exceeds the internal resistance of a cell. As shown in Fig. 6, the end diaphragms 40, 41 of adjacent cells are separated by a collecting disc 42 which leads electrolyte from diaphragm 40 via the central aperture in disc 43 to the spiral capillary channel in labyrinth disc 44 from which it is passed by the hole in the apertured or annular diaphragm 45 into collecting disc 46 which distributes it uniformly to diaphragm 41. If the adjoining electrodes are of the same polarity the separating discs may be made of synthetic resins and if they are of different polarity the discs may be made of metal.
