Polymer articles are roughened by being exposed to ions from a glow discharge, are immersed in a hydrochloric acid solution of stannous chloride and in a hydrochloric acid solution of Pd chloride, then are plated with metal first electrolessly and second electrolytically. Roughening by sand blasting or polishing with Ca oxide, C, B compounds or Si carbide may precede exposure to the ions and after exposure the articles are preferably immersed in an aqueous solution of NaOH before being immersed in the acid solutions Cu or Ni may be applied electrolessly and thickened electrolytically, using the solutions: Cu Electroless deposition Electrolytic deposition Copper sulphate 15g. Copper sulphate 225g. Rochelk salt 50g. 90% by weight conc. 17cc. Na carbonate 23g. Sulphuric acid Na hydroxide 15g. Hydrochloric acid 50ppm. Na borate 10g. Water 1000cc. 37% by weight formalin 70cc. Water 1000cc. Ni Electroless deposition Electrolytic deposition Ni Chloride 30g. Ni sulphate 300g. Na citrate 30g. Ni chloride 60g. Na hypophosphite 40g. Boric acid 40g. Water 1000cc. Water 1000cc. Ca was plated electrolytically for 30 minutes with an electric current density of 3À3 A/dm<SP>2</SP> at 30‹C. and Ni was plated electrolytically for 30 minutes at 3À5 A/dm<SP>2</SP> at 30‹C. Polymers which may be plated include ABS polymer, polycarbonate, polyvinyl chloride, pherolic resins and resins based on urea.</p> |
