PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To industrially and advantageously produce a high-purity 3- phenoxybenzyl ester derivative useful as an insecticide, etc., in high yield by reacting benzyl alcohol with a specific carboxylic acid chloride in the presence of an inorganic base and a phase-transfer catalyst. SOLUTION: (A) Phenoxybenzyl alcohol is reacted with (B) a carboxylic acid chloride of formula I (R is methyl or Cl) in the presence of an inorganic base (preferably sodium hydroxide) and a phase-transfer catalyst (preferably benzyltriethylammonium chloride) to thereby afford (C) a 3-phenoxybenzyl ester derivative of formula II. The reaction is preferably carried out in a two-layer system of xylene and water at 0-25 deg.C. For example, chrysanthemic acid chloride [(1R)-cis,trans-isomer] can be used as the component (B) to provide a 3- phenoxybenzyl chrysanthemate [(1R)-cis,trans-isomer] as the product (C). |
