PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a glass composition, having a remarkably wide wavelength region capable of manifesting laser oscillating or optical amplifying actions and capable of using the central wavelength thereof for laser or optical amplification located at 1.3-1.5μm important to the optical communication wavelength region and realizing permanent magnet characteristics alone. SOLUTION: This glass composition comprises 10-75mol% one or more alkaline carbonates or oxides of Be<2+> , Mg<2+> , Sr<2+> , Ba<2+> , etc., with Ca<2+> as the center and further contains fine particles of CrO2 and Cr<4+> ions. The glass composition is produced by including Cr ions in a glass having the alkaline carbonate or oxides thereof as a main composition and preparing the glass composition with a mixed gas of an inert gas such as He, Ne, Ar, Kr or Xe with at least one gas selected from O2 , H2 , CO and CO2 gases as an atmospheric gas. |
