Curable modified aromatic hydrocarbonformaldehyde resins are made by reacting from 5 to 70% by weight of an aromatic hydrocarbonformaldehyde resin with from 10 to 75% by weight of a phenol and from 20 to 80% by weight of a phenolic vegetable oil having at least one hydrocarbon chain of 15 to 17 carbon atoms. Specified aromatic hydrocarbons are toluene, o-, m- and p-xylene, mesitylene, naphthalene and alkyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbons. Specified phenols are phenol, cresol, xylenol, isopropyl phenol, t-butyl phenol, octyl phenol, nonyl phenol, bis-phenol-A and phenyl phenol. Specified vegetable oils are cashew nut oil, urushiol, lactol and thistiol. The modified resins may be made by reacting the hydrocarbon formaldehyde resin with: (1) a phenol in the presence of an acidic catalyst, the product being reacted with the vegetable oil and formaldehyde in the presence of an alkaline catalyst; (2) the vegetable oil in the presence of an acid catalyst, the product being reacted with phenol and formaldehyde in the presence of an alkaline catalyst; (3) with phenol in the presence of an acidic catalyst, reacting the product with formaldehyde to form a resol which is reacted with (a) the vegetable oil, or (b) a mixture of the vegetable oil and a phenol, or (c) a reaction product of the vegetable oil and formaldehyde, or (d) a reaction product of the vegetable oil, phenol and formaldehyde; (4) a phenolic vegetable oil and formaldehyde as in (3), the product being further reacted as in 3(a), 3(b), 3(c) or 3(d); (5) a phenol as in (1), the product being reacted with either (a) a reaction product of the vegetable oil and formaldehyde, or (b) a reaction product of the vegetable oil phenol and formaldehyde; (6) the vegetable oil as in (2), the product being reacted with either (a) a reaction product of phenol and formaldehyde, or (b) a reaction product of a phenol, a vegetable oil and formaldehyde; (7) a phenol-formaldehyde condensate in the presence of an acid catalyst, the product being reacted with either (a) a vegetable oil and formaldehyde, (b) a vegetable oil, a phenol and formaldehyde, or (c) the product of reaction between the compounds in (a) or (b); (8) a phenolic-vegetable oil-formaldehyde condensate in the presence of an acidic catalyst, the product being reacted as in 7(a), 7(b) or 7(c); and (9) and (10) a condensation product of a phenol, a phenolic vegetable oil and formaldehyde in the presence of an acidic catalyst, the product being reacted with either (a) a phenol and formaldehyde, or (b) a phenolic vegetable oil and formaldehyde, or (c) a phenol, a phenolic vegetable oil and formaldehyde, (d) a product of reaction between the compounds in (a) or (b) or (c) or (e) formaldehyde.
|
