PURPOSE: To provide a fractal image compression device which improves the reproducibility of edges and has high compressibility without deteriorating the picture quality by varying the size of a range block in a compression mode in response to the decision of areas. CONSTITUTION: An original image GF is divided into plural range blocks BR, and an area decision part 24 decides whether the blocks BR are equal to the edge areas or not based on the pixel density value. If the blocks RB are equal to the edge areas, the blocks RB are divided again at a redivision part 233. Then the least errors are calculated to the reduction patterns BDP1 to BDP8 of the block BD. A code DC is produced based on the position information on the block BD of the least error and the conversion information on the reduction/rotation conversion coefficients of the patterns BDP1 to BDP8. As a result, the edge reproducibility is improved and particularly the deterioration of picture quality can be suppressed for the character information. |
