PURPOSE: To manufacture the magnetic recording medium which can display sufficient electromagnetic conversion characteristics. CONSTITUTION: When a metallic magnetic thin film is formed by vacuum deposition on one main surface of a nonmagnetic base 6, the degree of vacuum in a filming chamber 1 during the vacuum deposition is controlled to 3×10<-2> -5×10<-2> Pa. Consequently, when the metallic magnetic thin film is formed while the degree of vacuum is properly controlled, variation of cupping in a plus (+) direction due to storage can be suppressed to obtain the magnetic recording medium which comes into excellent contact with a magnetic head.
