Chemical stripping of paints coated on substrates based on Al, Zn, Mg and their alloys by successive immersion of the substrates in a stripping bath, in an active rinsing bath, and in a final rinsing bath, is characterised in that, on the one hand, the active rinsing bath contains an agent (I) capable of separating the organic phase contg. the stripping agents and the mud from the aq. phase, and, on the other hand, the organic phase is recycled to the stripping bath after removing water traces and (I). Also claimed is an installation for the stripping of paints.
