PURPOSE: To provide a friction material excellent in friction action and a mechanical strength without cracking or expanding of an article to be formed during its formation by heat after preliminary formation. CONSTITUTION: A friction material mother member 2 formed by mixing a fiber base material, a bar-like material and other various packing materials is thrown into a forming metallic mold 3 and a bar-like member 5 is provided from the upper side of the forming metallic mold 5. Then, by moving the bar-like member 5 up and down while gradually reducing its stroke, the friction material mother member 2 is pressed and hardened until its volume reaches 50 to 60% of that at the time of throwing this in. Then, a bottom plate 4 is pused up and the friction material mother member 2 is compressed and preliminarily formed. |
