PURPOSE: To obtain a printing paper, especially a news printing paper having balanced water-absorption, surface strength and peeling resistance by externally adding a specific water-absorption controlling composition to a base paper. CONSTITUTION: An anionic copolymer such as styrene/maleic acid, styrene/ acrylic acid orα-olefin/maleic acid copolymer produced by compolymerizing (A) a modified starch or starch, (B) at least one kind of water-soluble polyacrylamide selected from nonionic polyacrylamide, cationic polyacrylamide having tertiary amine or quaternary amine and ampholytic polyacrylamide and (C) a monomer having a 6-10C hydrophobic substituent and a monomer having carboxyl group or sulfo group at ratios of A:(B+C)=10:1 to 10:10 and B:C=40:60 to 60:40. The composition is applied to a base paper with a gate roll coater at a rate of 0.05-1.0g/m<2> per one surface to obtain a printing paper having a drop water-absorption (in conformity with Japan TAPPI No.3) of 15-150 sheets.
