PURPOSE: To obtain a ferroelectric liq. crystal compsn. which is used for a liq. crystal element, is usable in a wide temp. range, and is excellent in high- speed response properties by compounding a host liq. crystal having a specific smectic phase with a specific chiral liq. crystal component. CONSTITUTION: This compsn. comprises an optically active tetrahydropyran deriv. of formula I and/or II (wherein Rf is a 1-2C fluoroalkyl; R<1> is a 3-20C alkyl; R<2> to R<4> and each H, a 1-5C alkyl, a 2-15C alkenyl, or a 7-10C aralkyl; X<1> is COO, OCO, O, or a single bond; X<2> is COO, OCO, CH2 O, OCH2 , C≡C, or a single bond; X<3> is COO, CH2 O, or O; X<4> is O or OCO; * is an axymmetric carbon; A and B are each a 6-membered cyclic group optionally having a halogen, cyano, or a fluoroalkyl group; and (n) is 0-1), either a mixture of at least one compd. of formula III and at least one compd. of formula IV or at least one compd. of formula V, at least one compd. of formula VI, VII, or VIII, and at least one compd. of formula IX.
