The diesel engine has a catalyser (7) inserted in the exhaust gas line for removal of nitrous oxides, with the exhaust gas selectively directed along a bypass line in parallel with the catalyser by operation of a pivoted control flap (203) during regeneration of the catalyser. The regeneration is effected by heating the catalyser to a temp. of 300 degrees C by injection of fuel in a preceding electrically-heated catalyser (214) so that the fuel is oxidised.
