The invention concerns a vehicle brake application device with an actuating arrangement which transfers the brake-actuation force introduced to the vehicle brake friction linings. In order to overcome the brake clearance, the application device comprises a brake clearance-adjustment device which is functionally independent of the actuating arrangement, is controlled mechanically, hydraulically or pneumatically and, at the beginning of braking, automatically overcomes the brake clearance between the friction linings and the brake member to be braked. After braking has occurred, the adjustment device resets the brake clearance. In this way, the necessary stroke of the actuating arrangement can be reduced such that vehicle brakes with a smaller construction are possible and the brake clearance can be selected freely within wide limits without disadvantageous effects.
