The protection device consists of an airbag (1) in a storage box (2) in the backrest (3) of the driver's seat. It is connected to a foot switch near the brake or clutch pedal and to a toggle switch on the dashboard. When either switch is operated by the driver, the airbag is inflated so that the space between the driver and the passenger is filled. This makes it more difficult for the passenger to attack the driver. There may also be a second airbag in the backrest of the front passenger seat. The operating mechanism could also be connected to a device producing an optical and/or acoustic signal.
