Silanes of formula (I), which can undergo hydrolysis and poly-addn. or polymerisation, are new, with the exception of silanes of formulae (IA), (IB), (IC) and (ID). In the formulae, R4 = -(CHR6-CHR6)n-, -CHR6-CHR6-S-R5-, -CO-S-R5-, -CHR6-CHR6-NR6-R5-, -Y-CS-NH-R5-, -S-R5-, -Y-CO-NH-R5-, -CO-O-R5-, -Y-CO-C2H3(COOH)-R5-, -Y-CO-C2H3(OH)-R5- or -CO-NR6-R5-; n = 0 or 1; R = H, R2-R1-R4-SiXxR33-x, COOH or R3; R1, R2, R5 = 0-15C alkylene or arylene(alkylene); R3 = 1-15 C alk(en)yl, (alkyl)aryl or arylalkyl; R6 = H or 1-10C alkyl or aryl; R9 = H or R3; R1, R2, R3, R5 and R9 may contain O or S atoms or ester, carbonyl, amido or amino gps.; R', R" = H, Me or Et; R* = a 1-6C organic gp.; R0 = 1-6C alkyl or acyl; X = H, halogen, OH, alkoxy, acyloxy, alkylcarbonyl, alkoxycarbonyl or NR"2, where R" = H, alkyl or aryl; Y = -O-, -S- or -NR6-; Z = -O- or -(CHR6)m-; m = 1 or 2; a = 1, 2 or 3 with b = 1 for a = 2 or 3; b = 1, 2 or 3 with a = 1 for b = 2 or 3; c = 1-6; x = 1, 2 or 3; and a+x = 2, 3 or 4.
