The band (2) is inserted, for forming a loop, by a band-conveyer (6) into a guide frame (7). The band conveyor has a drive wheel (11) driven in two rotary directions by a motor, and has a pressure wheel (12) pressing the band against the drive wheel. The band conveyor has an insertion appliance and a tensioning appliance (15,16). The pressure wheel (16) of the tensioning appliance is movable by a drive mechanism (21) into an operating position in which it presses the band against the drive wheel, and a non-operating position in which the pressure wheel is lifted off the band. A sensor (18) determines the end of the tightening process, and sets the tensioning appliance in motion.
