A metal/oxygen battery comprises a plurality of cells arranged with the cathodes of pairs of cells facing each other and spaced apart to allow passage of sufficient oxidant gas to maintain depolarization of them, and cooling means associated with their anodes. As shown in Fig. 1 cathodes 12 in a pair of adjacent cells face one another across space 13 which permits air to reach and depolarize cathodes 12. Each anode 11 faces an anode 11 of an adjacent pair of cells across a space 14 which permits cooling fluid to reach and cool the cooling members 15 attached to anodes 14. The cooling members 15 carry cooling fins 15a. In other embodiments: the cooling members extend around reservoirs for electrolyte to increase the available area (Fig. 3, not shown); the anodes make thermal but not electrical contact with internal cross members of the casing fabricated from material of good thermal conductivity (Fig. 4, not shown); cooling fluid is forced through spaces 14 via inlet and outlet manifolds (Fig. 5, not shown); and each anode 11 is common to two cathodes 12 and is provided with ducts for the passage of coolant (Fig. 6, not shown).
