An InGaAlP light-emitting diode chip (1) having a rectangular multilayer structure (2-6) with its sides of 0.25 mm or shorter. This chip is used to make a light-emitting diode, which is operated with a forward current of 2 to 5 mA for emission equivalent to that from the conventional light-emitting diodes with a forward current of about 25 mA.
