A safety device is disclosed for a vehicle equipped with an engine management system and an engine speed sensor. Signals (32) generated by the engine speed sensor (28) when the engine is started are supplied to a protective device (30) arranged between the engine management system (26) and the engine speed sensor (28). The protective device (30) generates derived signals (34) therefrom which are different from the signals (32). The derived signals (34) are supplied to the engine management system (26) only when the protective device (30) has been unlocked in the prescribed manner by means of an unlocking device (8). The derived signal (34) appropriately has an amplitude different from that of the signal emitted by the engine speed sensor (28).
