Non-plugging contact surfaces (7) are arranged at the surface of a new type of portable data carriers (3). The contact surfaces (7) establish a galvanic contact with adjacent data carriers (3) and at the same time with a bus system when several data carriers (3) of the same type are stacked. A substantially square-shaped adapter (1) has a PCMCIA standardised connection (8) that can be plugged into the equipment terminal strip and at least one cavity (2) for receiving at least one stackable data carrier (3). Mating contact surfaces (6) arranged in the receiving cavity (2) contact the contact surfaces (7) of a data carrier (3) placed in the cavity.
