A hydraulic control system for the workpiece transfer mechanism of a machining centre, comprises a pump (2) and fluid reservoir (9) which collectively supply a double-acting cylinder (16) whose movements determine the positioning of the workpiece. An EM operated directional-routing valve (6) and fluid velocity controller (1) together determine the response of the cylinder (16). A second fluid-routing valve (18) directs the working fluid from the valve (16) arriving via a solenoid control unit (SCU) back to the reservoir (9) subject to the operation of the velocity controller (3).
