The insertion apparatus comprises a housing or frame 6, a power supply means 3 which supplies power in the form of a rotary motion, via a driving means which may be a threaded rod 14, to an axially movable member 21 which engages with and applies force to an expander 1. Power may be transmitted from the power supply means 3 to the driving means 14 by gears 11, 12 to a threaded nut 13 on conical roller taper bearings 29. The power supply means 3 may be an electric or pneumatic drill, powered by gas, and the driving means may include a thrust plate 19 guided by tie rods 17, 18. The apparatus may also be used in reverse to remove the expander.
