In a process for producing a core wire for welding electrodes based on iron, nickel, cobalt, copper and/or aluminum, a filler or solid wire of the same or different chemical composition as the core wire is sheathed at least once. In addition, two or more metal bands laid on upon the other are formed into a gutter-like blank of approximately arcuate cross-section, filled with a powder and cross-sectionally closed. In a different embodiment, one metal band is formed into a gutter-like blank of arcuate cross-section and a filler wire or metal wire are laid therein, after which this blank is cross-sectionally closed. The surfaces of the wires and/or the bands forming the core wire are subsequently treated thermally or chemically.
