Water-activatable prim. cells are claimed, as are also batteries comprising a number of cells in the form of bipolar electrodes, the cells comprising highly water-activatable light metal (or alloy) anodes (1) and being such that (a) the cathode consists of two layers (3, 5) bonded together by a conductive metal net (4); (b) the layer (3) directed towards the anode (1) is of a conductive porous material and is in direct contact with net (4); and (c) the other layer (5) contains cpds. (opt. in admixt. with fillers) which form with water a conductive soln. of a depolarising oxidn. agent. The cathodes pref. contain polyethylene or PTFE.
