The control elements (1) are driven by electro-viscous liquid and have control channels with electrodes which permit or interrupt currents to flow in the liquid according to the applied voltages. Each control element has a hydrocylinder (12) connected with a reservoir (2) via two control channels (16) contg. an overpressure (22) and an underpressure (21) chamber. Each control channel is connected to one of the chambers. The control channels of a control element each have a first electrode (17) or a second electrode (18), which are fixed at different voltages in the operating state, and a common central electrode (19). The central electrode represents a single control electrode for each control element and can be switched within the range of the potential difference between the first and second electrodes to enable the flow according to the potential difference in one control channel and prevent it in another.
