[Also in Divisions C3 and C7] A water soluble resin suitable for coating is obtained by neutralizing with ammonia, an alkylamine, an alkanol amine, an alkylene polyamine or an alkali-or alkaline earth metal hydroxide a composition comprising (A) an adduct of a diene polymer with an α, #-unsaturated carboxylic acid and (B) a condensate of formaldehyde and a phenol carboxylic acid. The resin may be mixed with a water-miscible solvent. It may be applied by dipping, spraying, brushing, rolling or flow-coating. In Example 2 component (A) is prepared from maleic anhydride and polybutadiene in the presence of copper naphthenate, and xylene. It is diluted with diacetone alcohol, hydrolysed with water and then treated with a copolymer of allyl alcohol and styrene. Component (B) is prepared from formaldehyde and 4, 4-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) pentanoic acid in the presence of triethylamine. The composition also comprises ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, methylate melamine formaldehyde resin, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether Fe 2 O 3 and triethylamine. It is dipspray- or flow-coated on to steel. |
