VARIABLE LENGTH ENCODING/DECODING DEVICE

PURPOSE: To provide a variable length encoding device capable of performing decoding both in forward direction and backward direction and constituting variable length codes with high efficiency and with less useless bit patterns. CONSTITUTION: This device is capable of performing decoding both in forward direction and backward direction and is provided with a code word table 102 constituted so as to recognize the break of the codes by the predetermined weight (the number of '1' or '0' in a code word in the case of binary codes) of the code words for storing the plural code words corresponding to information symbols and an encoder 103 for selecting the code word corresponding to the information symbol of input from the code word table 102 and outputting it as encoding data.
