<p>A catalyst for oxychlorinating ethylene to ethylene dichloride, having copper and potassium absorbed onto an alumina support. The catalyst having a partially hollow cylindrical shape with internal reinforcing vanes, and a diameter in the range of greater than 6.5 mm, a height in the range of 0.5 to 5 times the diameter, a wall thickness in the range of 0.1 to 0.3 times the diameter, and a vane thickness of 0.1 to 0.3 times the diameter. One method embodiment includes contacting oxychlorination reactants in the presence of such a catalyst. Another method embodiment utilizes a two reactor oxychlorination system, with the oxygen and hydrogen chloride feeds split between the reactors.</p> |
