A proximity sensor (20) includes a bar magnet (22) having opposing North and South poles and two magnetic sensors (26, 28) disposed on a lateral face of the magnet between the opposing North and South poles and a pair of corresponding flux concentrators (31, 33). The sensor assembly (20) is utilized with either a two channel ferrous target with the longitudinal axis of the sensors (26, 28) aligned parallel to the axis of rotation of the target or a single channel ferrous target with the longitudinal axis of the sensors (26, 28) aligned perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the target. Thus, the sensor (20) is able to detect the proximity and the direction of rotation of the target.
