PURPOSE: To reduce the power penalty of the system as a whole, to make the size of the device smaller and to reduce cost by integrating a DFB laser which is the light source of controlling light beams, a wave summer and a Mach- Zhener interferometer on the same substrate. CONSTITUTION: The input port side of a Mach-Zhender interferometer 20 is connected to a DFB laser 12 which is the light source of controlling light beams and a first optical waveguide 14 through which a signal light beamλ1 . is inputted from the external to the element. Moreover, waveguides 21 and 22, which form the interferometer 20, are the simiconductor waveguides formed on a same semiconductor substrate 10. The laser 12 is monolithically and integrally connected to the waveguides. SOA active layers 23 and 24 are arranged in the respective center portion of the waveguides 21 and 22 that form the interferometer 20.
