PURPOSE: To reduce pollutant from an engine by providing a reaction chamber for oxidizing fuel equivalent substance in exhaust gas, a passive means for lowering the temperature of effluent, and a flame arresting means for avoiding the ignition of a mixture outside of an engine. CONSTITUTION: Exhaust gas from a small single-cylinder gasoline engine of a lawn mower or the like reaches an exhaust pipe 2 functioning as an air suction nozzle, and air sucked into an enclosure plate 11 via a flame arrester 13 is sucked into the pipe 3 via an opening 4. The exhaust gas and the air added thereto enter a reactor/muffler 5 from the pipe 3 and come in contact with the catalyst surface of a turning element 9 to generate combustion, and contact between gas and the catalyst surface of a baffle plate 10 assists in holding the flame. A high temperature combustion product from a container is oriented to a venturi line 7 by a baffle plate 6 and mixed with air sucked through a flame arresting screen 16 and exhausted outside after being cooled.
