<p>A composition, suitable for softening water, controlling its pH and controlling the growth of algae, comprises a zeolite and a culture of denitrificating bacteria. Preferably the composition also includes potassium carbonate and sodium hydrogen sulphate, the composition being prepared by (a) impregnating the zeolite with aqueous potassium carbonate, then impregnating the product of step (a) with aqueous sodium hydrogen sulphate and finally impregnating the result of step (b) with the denitrificating bacteria, the resultant composition comprising 50-75% zeolite, 0.5-5% potassium carbonate, 15-35% sodium hydrogen sulphate and 5-20% bacteria. Preferably the bacteria is selected from an aerobic chemoheterotrophic group, for example the group consisting of rhyzobium and azobacter. Preferably the zeolite is natural and is chosen from clinoptilolite, chabuzite, mordenite, erionite or faujasite. The composition is suitable for treating swimming pools, ponds, lakes etc.</p> |
