By means of a method for measuring internal space using a range finder 1, the unobstructed distances to the walls A,B,C,D,E which delimit a space are measured and the information is stored in a computer 2 for working out a floor plan of the internal space. The range finding is carried out using a portable range finder 1 by setting a point on the range finder as a starting point and by measuring the distance from this starting point to the surface of the opposite wall. In this way, the distances 1.-5. are measured between the corners parallel with the walls to obtain the lengths of the walls and the distances 6.-8. are measured diagonally across the space between the corners in such a way that taken diagonally from corner to corner across the space such distances, which together with two other distances form a triangle, are at least n-2 in number, in which n signifies the number of distances taken parallel with the walls. The abovementioned distances are stored in a portable computer 2 in the space and on the basis of these, the dimensions of the space are calculated using a computer program by the utilization of an averaging calculation algorithm. The measurement result for the space is approved and stored in the computer 2 or rejected on the basis of the results of the averaging calculations obtained by the program. <IMAGE>
