In an internal combustion engine of the auxiliary vortex combustion chamber type, the volume of the auxiliary combustion chamber and a connection hole is about 65% to 95% of the total combustion chamber volume when the piston is at top dead center. The auxiliary combustion chamber extends over a major part of the cross-section of the cylinder. Thus, it is possible to obtain a higher output without increasing the size of the engine.
