PURPOSE: To obtain an antimicrobial agent by using a specific optically active compound, effectively exhibiting more excellent antimicrobial activity, useful as a cosmetic safely without anxiety due to no skin irritation. CONSTITUTION: This antimicrobial agent comprises an optically active a hydroxy aliphatic carboxylic acid ester of formula [R<1> is a 6-12C alkyl; R<2> is a 1-3C alkyl (*) is an asymmetric carbon atom] as an active ingredient. The optically active substance of formula I may be either an (R)-isomer of formula II or an (S)-isomer of formula III. The optically active compound of formula I shows sufficient antimicrobial action on fungi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, yeast for refined SAKE (rice wine), etc. Ethyl (R)- or (S)-α- hydroxydecanoate is preferable as the compound of formula I. The compound of formula I sufficiently shows its effect when used in a region of pH6.5 to pH7.5. The compound of formula I in an amount of 0.01-5wt.% is preferably used as the active ingredient.
