PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform the printing of a unit record for a short time while keeping the min. occupying area, by enabling to print in the same size in both of a portrait mode and a landscape mode by inclining a printing head by a specific angle, and making the character size of the portrait mode different from that of the landscape mode. SOLUTION: A printer 10 has a separation bidirectional paper feed means and a unidirectional receipt feed means for a receipt 11 above paper 12 and, in a portrait mode, a printing head 20 is moved in the direction traversing the feeding direction of the receipt 11 or horizontally and laterally moved to print a horizontal line. When a perpendicular line is printed, the printing head 20 keeps a stationary position and the paper 12 is laterally moved up and down. Printing timing controls the printing head 20 so that a column 50 inclined by an angle (d) of 0-90 deg. forms a desired character in a landscape mode. Since the printing head 20 is inclined by αdeg.. Therefore, a predetermined wire row is inclined by αdeg. to perform printing in vertical and horizontal directions, both portrait and landscape modes are enabled by the same printing head, and a character smaller than that due to a usual vertical printing head is printed.
