Stolen vehicle recovery procedure

The stolen vehicle recovery procedure involves an identification card (1) which is associated with an individual vehicle, together with another card (2), which is associated with an individual person. Both of these cards can be read electronically at a card-reading station (3), and the data obtained from them both is sufficient to confirm lawful use of the vehicle. Data extracted from the cards is passed on as a message (4) to a central data register and storage/analysis unit (5), where it is compared with previously-stored data. The results of the comparison (6) are then transmitted back to the requesting card reading station. Neither of the cards is necessarily attached to the vehicle.
