The present invention relates to a process and an apparatus for the continuous production of particle board, fibreboard, plastic and wood panels using a continuously operating press. In order to ensure that the optimal bulk density profile can be controlled as desired at maximum production speed, a low pressure area is provided following the pre-compaction of the material to be pressed in the entry gap in the subsequent main compression areas, by means of flexible press frames and/or press segments, and which decompresses and compresses at a steep lead angle or descent angle tangent .beta. or .beta.1 of approximately 0.05 for a vertical travel rising very briefly from 0 to about 10 mm at maximum production speed.
